The Difference Between Canadian Prepaid Credit Cards and Canadian Secured Credit Cards

Canadian Prepaid Credit Cards can be used much like a regular credit card in the sense that you don’t need to bring cash to make a purchase. These cards usually have a Visa or Mastercard logo on them so they can be used to buy goods or pay for things at merchants and establishments where credit card payments are accepted. A prepaid credit card can also be used to shop from the internet. What makes it different from a secured credit card?
What are Prepaid Credit Cards?
Providers of prepaid credit cards do not check credit history. Regardless of your credit rating, you can apply for a prepaid card and get approved with no questions. However, prepaid card companies don’t include credit reporting to the major credit bureaus (Equifax Canada or TransUnion Canada). Therefore, if you want to build your credit history, a prepaid card may not be the best tool to help you. This type of card is not attached to your bank savings account either. In order to use the card, you must first deposit funds to your prepaid card. If you put $300 in your prepaid account, you can use the card as long as you have a remaining fund enough to make another purchase. Whenever you’ve used up your balance, you’ll need to deposit cash again before using it.
The good thing about using this type of card is that it eliminates the risk of bad debt. Since your purchases will be paid using the cash you’ve deposited in your card, there’s no need to submit your payment at a later time. Also, you will not incur any interest rate or additional charges.
What are Secured Credit Cards?
As a secured credit card holder, you can enjoy a credit line like all other credit card holders. This means, you can charge purchases to your card and pay for them at a later time as long as you don’t exceed your credit limit. You are also given a grace period- or a period of time where you can pay off your balances without being charged with additional interest costs.
Consequently, if you fail to pay your balances in full within your repayment period or if you choose to carry over your balance for the next month, you will incur the interest rate cost in your account. Secured credit card holders are also required to submit a security deposit in their accounts. The amount of your deposit will often determine the value of your credit limit. Nevertheless there are cards for bad credit that offer credit lines that are slightly higher than the required security deposit.
Many people choose to get a secured credit card because of their poor credit history. If you live in Canada, check your credit report and see if you’ll qualify for Canadian credit cards that require excellent or good credit. If not, you can consider getting a Canadian secured credit card instead.
This type of card is ideal for people who want to establish credit history or rebuild bad credit history. Unlike prepaid, secured credit card companies will report your payment to the major credit bureaus like Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada. Thus, as you use your card and as you stay consistent with your payments, you can improve your credit score one step a time.

Tracing The Relationship Between Business And Banking

Banks and bank services have existed throughout history; it is believed they predate currency and traces of bank records are estimated to have been present in the third millennium B.C. In the ancient world they held grain, cattle and precious metals such as gold and are believed to have carried out their business in temples and palaces as these were the safest places to contain wealth.

The business bank relationship is believed to have begun in ancient Babylon where temple priests granted loans to merchants. It is believed that the first laws in society contained rules for banking and a bank code of conduct. Showing the extent at which banks and society are intertwined.

Ancient Greece took banking further by creating a centralised grain bank network and created credit slips for customers. These slips were used in business and consisted of instructions to bank tellers to perform deposits and withdrawals. This can be seen as a strengthening of the business bank relationship.

The Roman Empire perfected banking; being obsessed with administration, banks took a more recognisable form as increasing amounts of paperwork were involved in transactions. Detailed bank regulations and laws were also created to define the industry. The Romans also created the first bank charges in the form of interest. The business however experienced a downturn with the rise of Christianity as interest charges were seen as immoral; subsequently bank services dwindled in Western Europe until the time of the crusades.

The medieval period saw a revival for the business bank relationship. Trade fairs present in most major European cities began to create bills of exchange where notes were given in exchange for hard currency. These bills were redeemable at other cities and hence eliminated the necessity to carry huge fortunes across country; forming a far safer option for merchants. This need for the transfer of large sums of money was a direct result of the crusades and as the banks redeemed the bills in line with exchange rates and inflation, bank services started to become profitable.

Throughout the later medieval period the Italian bankers of Lombardy and Genoa became the financial powerhouses of the Mediterranean. Their loans allowed business to flourish as overseas trade became a mainstay of any nation’s economy. Italian bankers spread throughout Europe and appeared in many European cities. Although problems did arise when defaulted payments by monarchs caused the bank services to become political issues.

During the beginning of the modern period the business bank relationship was further enhanced. Expeditions to the new world were funded by banks in Spain and Portugal; such journeys became profitable for the bank tellers as the returns became vast after the initial outlay. In Britain, new trade businesses used banks to fund their activities in the new world with tobacco and coffee imports from the Indies being extremely profitable.

Bank services and loans were the backbone of the industrial revolution in Britain. Without the funding that supported the entrepreneurs the improvements to the transport network and creation of evermore complex steam engines would not have been possible. It is thanks to the banking that Britain became the richest nation in the world, the empire was dependent upon loans and the reason it expanded to such a huge extent was the desire to repay these sums of money.

In the modern world global bank services have shrunk the world. Transfers are now instantaneous and banks fund vast projects on a worldwide basis. The profits they gain break records on a regular basis, figures of twenty and thirty billion are not uncommon for the world’s largest banks. These sums make some banks wealthier than nations and subsequently the favour they hold in politics and business is seemingly unassailable.

Bank services have provided financial support for the business world since the beginnings of civilisation; today they hold a position of power as entrenched as many political systems. In many cases bank services have been fundamental in the formation of nations and political systems and have funded the exploration and empire building that has created the world we see today. The close business bank relationship is profitable for both sides, as long as banks are willing to fund entrepreneurial schemes the relationship is set to continue indefinitely.

What is the Difference Between a Merchant Account and a Payment Gateway?

If you decide to open an ecommerce store, you are going to have to become familiar with merchant accounts and payment gateways. In order for you to receive funds from an online transaction, you will need to have some sort of merchant account. Although your bank can probably provide one you should plan on paying dearly for it. If you do not want to do this you can check into the more popular ecommerce merchant accounts available online. With ecommerce becoming so popular, gaining a merchant account has never been easier.

Payment gateways act as a sort of go-between for the sellers shopping cart and the financial institutions involved in the transaction. Gateways are not visible to the shopper and handle the transaction between your customer’s financial institution and your merchant account. This is all done behind the scenes when the customer clicks “buy it now” or enters the checkout.

There are also third-party credit card processors such as Paypal. They do charge more per transaction but there is no monthly fee. This is best if you are just starting out in ecommerce and are unsure of how the payment process works. Almost everyone has a Paypal account. Once you are on your way to becoming an established business, you will want to check more thoroughly into merchant accounts and payment gateways to save money.

All transactions go through the payment gateway. They provide information to and from the buyer’s and sellers financial networks. Once this is done, the money from the seller’s account goes into your merchant account.
It is extremely important that you check the differences in rates before choosing a payment gateway and merchant account. Don’t settle on the first company you come across. Do some investigating or you may end up losing money and fast. Check the services and the rates for both payment gateways and merchant accounts. Ultimately you will want to get the most services for the most reasonable amount of money. That doesn’t always mean the cheapest. You often get what you pay for and that goes for ecommerce as well.

There should be no hidden fees involved in any type of merchant account or payment gateway. Fees should be laid out for you to see. If you do not see a complete list of charges that would be incurred, do not use that service. There are reputable services and not so reputable services so know what you are getting.

Merchant accounts act on behalf of the seller whereas a payment gateway is an information port for all of the financial networks involved in the transaction. This includes the buyer and the seller. Businesses must have both a payment gateway and a merchant account if they are not using a third-party service. Without a merchant account a seller cannot receive money from an online transaction. Without a payment gateway, the transaction cannot take place at all. This is the major difference between the two.

What is the Difference Between a Prepaid Credit Card and a Normal Credit Card

A prepaid card looks like a credit or debit card. It can be used in the same way as a credit card in shops, restaurants or online, around the world. The main difference is that there is no risk of getting into debt because you can only spend the amount of money that is pre-loaded on the card.

Many people are rejected by credit card companies because they have poor credit. You will not have that difficulty with a prepaid credit card.

The problem with today’s society is that a credit card is needed to book hotels, airline flights or shopping online. This means that people with bad credit can’t do any of these things because they don’t qualify for a credit card. It is for this reason prepaid cards are becoming very popular.

In particular, a Prepaid Credit Card is a pay as you go credit card. These can be created by a stand-alone company, not one of the traditional banks. Using one can mean that you’re not using a bank at all! They won’t be concerned about your credit rating.

It basically works like a normal credit card (or debit card), except that it’s not associated with a bank account. You have to add credit at a reload center, which are located at retailers, check cashing locations and supermarkets (such as Tesco, Safeway, Wal Mart etc), then you use it as you would a normal credit card.

Unlike traditional credit cards, the Prepaid Credit Card does not extend credit to cardholders. Instead, accounts are prepaid for a specific amount, while still being backed by MasterCard/Visa for near universal acceptance. There is no line of credit and accounts are only good for the balance applied.

We will make no apology for stressing that your credit rating is not a determining factor when issuing the Prepaid Credit Cards. All applicants are accepted, regardless of their credit history subject to verification of their address etc. There is no credit check performed with any credit referencing company and the card is therefore available to all. This opens up an opportunity for those who are normally declined mainstream credit card facilities due to adverse credit, low credit score, or lack of credit history. Even young children can use these cards.

As generally used in the English language, “prepaid” and “credit card” are a contradiction in terms. “Prepaid” means you have paid for something before taking receipt of it and will not be receiving a bill requesting payment later. Whereas, “credit card” means that you will be placing the purchase on credit and the lender (issuing bank) will supply the funds to the merchant. Then later when you receive your billing statement from them, you will be required to pay in full or in installments. Thus the commonly used term “prepaid credit card” could be considered an oxymoron. So, it is more accurate calling these cards a Prepaid Visa or MasterCard.

In other words a prepaid card is like a cross between a store gift card and a bank debit card. It is similar to a store gift card in that a certain amount of money has been loaded on it. It is like a bank debit card because it is accepted any place that a major credit card is honored, even online! Unlike a debit card, however, a prepaid card is not attached to a specific bank account.
